How to Get Rid of Black Algae in your Swimming Pool

Black algae is a type of bacteria that can be really tough to kill and control in your pool. Here we show you had to kill black algae fast and how to prevent it from coming back.

What is Black Algae?

Despite its name, black algae isn't actually an algae at all—it's a type of cyanobacteria. It forms in dark, blue-green, or black clusters that typically look like pinheads or small coins stuck to your pool’s walls, floor, or steps. Unlike standard green algae that float freely, black algae features a thick, protective outer layer and microscopic roots that dig deep into porous pool surfaces such as plaster, concrete, and pebble tech.

Because of this deep root system, standard pool brushing and regular chlorine treatments often aren't enough to kill it. If the roots aren't completely destroyed, the black algae will keep growing back.

Step-by-step

01

Add Swamp Treat

Add one (1) bottle of Swamp Treat™ per 20,000 gallons of pool water.

03

Shock

Shock the pool with your choice of chlorine – using about 2 pounds/gallons of chlorine per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Refer to the directions on your chlorine for “super-chlorination” specific dosing.
04

Run the filter

Let the filter run, and backwash/clean the filter as necessary. Refer to the filter manual for recommendations.

Add No Mor Problems

Add No Mor Problems regularly to prevent the algae from returning. Just add 5 ounces each time you replace 2 tablets in your feeder, or each time you add a pound or a gallon of your regular chlorine.
