How to Clean a Green Swimming Pool Fast

Every once and while, your pool will get away from you and turn into a total swamp filled with green algae. Maybe you had a bad storm. Maybe you went on vacation. No matter how it happened, we’ll show you how you can have your pool looking back to new in no time.

What is Green Algae?

Green algae is the most common form of swimming pool algae, typically appearing as a slimy green film on your pool’s walls, steps, and floor, or as a cloudy green tint suspended in the water. It is a microscopic plant-like organism that thrives in warm water, sunlight, and the presence of nitrates or phosphates—often taking hold when sanitizer levels drop, or circulation is poor. While unsightly, it is a very manageable issue. It essentially feeds on the organic debris in your water, turning your pool into a “swamp,” but with the proper chemical treatment and physical removal, it can be eradicated quickly.

Step-by-step

01

Skim

Using your skimmer net, remove as much debris from the water's surface as possible.

Vacuum to Waste

Set your system to “vacuum to waste” and using your pool vacuum remove as much large debris and sludge from the bottom of the pool as possible.

Shock

Shock the pool with your choice of chlorine – using about 2 pounds/gallons of chlorine per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Refer to the directions on your chlorine for “super-chlorination” specific dosing.
06

Add Clear Treat

For mild cloudiness, immediately add three (3) ounces of Clear Treat™ per 10,000 gallons of water. For more severe cloudy water you may double or triple the dose.

07

Run the filter

Let the filter run, and backwash/clean the filter as necessary. Refer to the filter manual for recommendations.

Add No Mor Problems

Add No Mor Problems regularly to prevent the algae from returning. Just add 5 ounces each time you replace 2 tablets in your feeder, or each time you add a pound or a gallon of your regular chlorine.
